Guarantee
Moving can come with a lot of upfront costs.
A deposit guarantee is a paid alternative to the full upfront cash deposit. When your landlord offers it and your application is approved, it can give you more flexibility at move-in.
AT MOVE-IN
You do not pay the full deposit in cash. Instead, Keyhole provides your landlord with the agreed deposit guarantee, and you pay for keeping that guarantee in place.
WHAT ARE YOU PAYING FOR?
You are paying for the guarantee to remain in place as security for your landlord. The money is not saved and is not returned to you like the unused part of a cash deposit.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MOVE OUT?
You are still responsible for any valid costs in your move-out settlement. Your payments for the guarantee do not cover those costs. If the guarantee is used to pay those costs to your landlord, you must repay the amount to Keyhole.
IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?
A deposit guarantee can leave more of your money available for moving and other priorities — giving you more room at move-in.

Secure
Your cash deposit is still your money.
Your landlord gets security while the deposit remains yours. With Secure, your full deposit is held separately in a blocked account in your name throughout the tenancy.
AT MOVE-IN
You pay the agreed cash deposit into your Secure account. There is no fee for you to set up or use the account, and it can also be opened without a Norwegian national ID number or D-number.
WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR MONEY?
Your deposit remains locked and separate from your landlord’s money and cannot be used freely by either of you. It remains in your name, and any interest earned belongs to you.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MOVE OUT?
Your landlord prepares the move-out settlement. The deposit is distributed as you both agree, or through the statutory process if you disagree. Any amount left after valid costs have been paid is returned to you.
IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?
If your landlord offers both Secure and Guarantee, Secure may be right for you if you can pay the full cash deposit and would rather keep it in your name than pay for a guarantee.

The landlord decides whether security is required for the tenancy, and almost all of them require it. What you can usually influence is the form that security takes. With a guarantee, a third party provides the security and you keep your savings available. So in practice,…

Common questions
Find answers about your options, what Keyhole may ask you for and where to get the right help.
Secure and Guarantee handle your deposit in two different ways.
With Secure, you pay the full cash deposit into a blocked account in your name. At move-out, the deposit is distributed once the settlement has been agreed or decided, and any amount left after valid costs is returned to you.
With Guarantee, you pay for a guarantee instead of paying the full cash deposit upfront. Your payments are not savings, and you remain responsible for valid costs when you move out. If the guarantee is used to pay your landlord, you must repay that amount to Keyhole.
Your landlord decides whether Secure, Guarantee or both are available for your tenancy. If both are offered, you can choose between them, but Guarantee still requires an application and approval.
If your landlord does not currently offer Keyhole, you can ask us to contact them and explain how the options work.
You may be able to apply to NAV for financial assistance. NAV usually helps through a NAV deposit guarantee, but may also provide support for money placed in a blocked deposit account.
Speak to your local NAV office before you sign the tenancy agreement. Your situation is assessed individually, and the form of support and any repayment terms can vary.
If NAV is funding a deposit for a Keyhole Secure account, follow the instructions from your NAV caseworker and Keyhole. The process may vary between municipalities.
Yes. Keyhole Secure also works if you do not have a Norwegian national ID number or D-number. This means you can set up a blocked deposit account for your Norwegian tenancy even if you are still new to the country.
Your landlord must offer Secure, and you will still need to complete the required identity verification and pay the agreed cash deposit.
Some Keyhole services require identity or financial verification before they can be set up or approved. We use the information to complete the relevant verification and provide the service connected to your tenancy.
We handle your information through secure digital processes, with care and in line with GDPR.
